I've figured out who and what I want to be. I put it all together. I combined my controversial feelings about homeschooling and education with my desire to be personal chef with my desire to be a stay at home mom with the reality of my being single and childless near the end of my childbearing years and in need of a career change. I have it. I can be around children, and then send them home. I can educate, but not do committee work. I can talk to animals and decorate my house just the way I want. And the weirder I am, the better.
I mean why wouldn't I want to be Mrs. Piggle Wiggle?
Written by Betty MacDonald in the 1940s and 50s, to entertain her own children, these books were illustrated by the now famous writer/illustrator Maurice Sendak (author of Where The Wild Things Are, Sendak passed away just two weeks ago).
The Mrs. Piggle Wiggle stories are wonderfully charming lessons for children, and take on topics ranging from how not to be a piggy at the dinner table to how to take responsibility for caring for family pets.

Of course you want to read these books. With characters bearing names like Paraphernalia Grotto, Cormorant Broomrack, Pergola Wingsproggle, Imogene Haversack, and Nicholas Semicolon, who wouldn't?
Some of the "cures" Mrs. Piggle Wiggle offers are:
If you are nostalgic for childhood, just love clever children's fiction, or want to get your kids to sleep at night, I highly recommend these books. They are also a great way to talk about right and wrong, and other lessons without being preachy, but always making you smile.
Read the books.
You'll understand why I want to be Mrs. Piggle Wiggle.

I love her! Those books are fantastic.
I've never heard of those...
How is that possible?
I always loved Amelia Bedelia.
Mrs. Piggle Wiggle is great! Good idea to become her. I love children's books so much - and am often tempted to buy stacks of them off the Internet (my friends make fun of me like anything for this). There's one picture book that I'm dying to go through but haven't been able to get my hands on. It's called - The Little Mouse, The Red-Ripe Strawberry and the Big Hungry Bear.
Ha!! I just googled it to make sure I got the title right - and there it was being read on youtube... so my wish has finally been satisfied. (It wasn't as good as I had anticipated).
I want to be married to a pirate, especially one who looks like Johnny Depp. Does Mrs Piggle Wiggle give advice as to how to meet a pirate?
The world shed a tear when Maurice Sendak died. He was a truly talented man. And I completely understand where you're coming from...be around children, teach them, but without any of the paperwork or committees or "accountability". (Err...I'm not against being accountable, by the way...I'm just against "accountability" - and children - being reduced to a string of numbers.)
I l-o-v-e Mrs. Piggle Wiggle! Just last week I introduced my short people to the "Thought You Said-ers Cure". Brilliant!
Those are great books!
I could spend hours in the children's section of bookstores, and to be honest, I have. However, I've never heard of Mrs. Piggle Wiggle! I will trust she is a stable role model and that I shouldn't be concerned about your future transformation into her likeliness. ;)
"If You Give a Mouse a Cookie" was always one of my favorites...
Which book provides the cure for interrupters? Definitely need that.
OH! I forgot ALL ABOUT Mrs. Piggle Wiggle. I LOVED her. LOVED! She was awesome all the time.
Thanks for reminding me.
You're very welcome! Amazing how these books can transform us back into our younger selves and we re-experience our love for the books.
Mrs. Piggle Wiggle's Magic :) Long time no hear - how are you?
Yes, I only wish I had children to read them to!
Did you really!! How brilliant :)
Indeed maam. Sometimes I think we forgot why we even have schools in the first place. Sometimes it seems like the last thing that is valued is the actual education of the individual.
Probably not, but she probably tells stories of her pirate love ;)
I love that title, sure sounds worth reading. Mrs. Piggle Wiggle won't let you down :)
I do not know but get on it!
Indeed. Definitely sell a few!
We have had these books kicking around her for about five years and I just never thought to read one for myself when the kids passed them by! Now I will go check them out!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MRS. PIGGLE WIGGLE! And. I tried out one of her techniques - About the messy room? It worked! My oldest who was obviously quite young had the messiest room EVER and finally I stopped harping on him about and eventually after broken toys, no place to sleep, clothes n' toys everywhere. He cleaned his room on his own! Yay Mrs. Piggle Wiggle!
Love this post and so happy to know I'm not the only one who has ever heard of these books. Whenever I mention them to someone they say they don't know the books. So happy you do!
My favourite kids books right now are Mo Willems' 'Elephant and Piggie' series. They are so awesome. I also recently read, "My Name is Mina" by David Almond - truly charming. Mina's diary could have been my own from when I was a kid.
I'm 13 now, and Mrs. Piggle Wiggle was me and my best friend's favorite books as kids. I think Mrs. Piggle Wiggle might be a genius....
I think so too Julia! So glad others have heard of these books!!
Thanks for the recommendations Reanna!
Oh my goodness you should write about this more :) I just love these stories!
I hope you enjoy them!
